Er begann seine Lehrtätigkeit 1931 an der Geographischen Fakultät der Leningrader Universität. Von 1936 bis 1947 war Professor an der kartographischen Abteilung des Moskauer Instituts der Ingenieure für Geodäsie, Luftbildfotografie und Kartographie (MIIGAiK) und ab 1942 begann er auch an der Moskauer Staatlichen Universität Vorlesungen über Kartographie zu halten. M. V. Lomonosov (Staatliche Universität Moskau). Seit 1947 arbeitete er ständig an der Fakultät für Geographie der Staatlichen Universität Moskau , wo er zunächst Leiter der Abteilung für Geschichte der geographischen Wissenschaften (1949-1950) und dann Leiter der Abteilung für Geodäsie und Kartographie (seit 1950) war. Doktor der Technischen Wissenschaften (1940), Professor (1936), Vizerektor der Staatlichen Universität Moskau (1947- 1954). Gründer der wissenschaftlichen Schule für geographische Kartographie. Die Hauptwerke zur Theorie der Kartographie, Kartographie, Geschichte der Kartographie, sowie die Probleme der komplexen thematischen Kartographie.
