Er studierte Betriebswirtschaftslehre an der Universität zu Köln und an der Pennsylvania State University sowie Rechtswissenschaften an der Universität zu Köln. Dort promovierte er im Jahre 1987 bei Prof. Dr. Klaus Tipke zu einem handels- und steuerbilanzrechtlichen Thema. Dr. Stefan Kraus begann seine anwaltliche Laufbahn 1988 in einer Sozietät von Rechtsanwälten, Wirtschaftsprüfern und Steuerberatern in Wuppertal und wechselte 1989 in das Kölner Büro von Arthur Andersen, wo er maßgeblich am Aufbau von deren rechtsanwaltlicher Beratungspraxis Andersen Legal in Deutschland und international beteiligt war, aus der die Luther Rechtsanwaltsgesellschaft mbH hervorgegangen ist. Von 1995 bis 2010 führte Dr. Stefan Kraus die Luther Rechtsanwaltsgesellschaft mbH als Managing Partner. Er ist Mitglied der Rechtsanwaltskammern Köln und Luxemburg und Co-Head des Londoner Büros von Luther.
