2. "The mines make us poor" : large-scale mining in Burkina Faso
abstractGLOCON's new Country Report looks at the impact of industrial mining in Burkina Faso on the local rural population and presents the view of residents close to six industrial mines. Surveys in the affected villages show that - in contrast to the promises of mining companies and the government - the opening of the mines has not improved the living conditions. On the contrary, respondents report the loss of their livelihoods and damage to their health, as well as experienced disrespect by the mine operators. Those affected protest in various ways and demand compensation payments, the creation of jobs and income generating opportunities, as well as investment in local infrastructure. This report is available in English and French.

abstractDer neue Country Report von GLOCON beschäftigt sich mit den Auswirkungen des industriellen Bergbaus in Burkina Faso auf die lokale Bevölkerung und stellt den Blick von Anwohner*innen von sechs industriellen Minen vor. Befragungen in den betroffenen Dörfern zeigen, dass sich - entgegen der Versprechungen von Unternehmen und der Regierung - die Lebensbedingungen durch die Eröffnung der Minen nicht verbessert haben. Im Gegenteil: Die Befragten berichten vom Verlust ihrer Existenzgrundlagen und gesundheitlichen Schäden sowie von Respektlosigkeit, die sie seitens der Minenbetreiber erfahren. Die Betroffenen protestieren auf vielfältige Weise und fordern Entschädigung durch Kompensationszahlungen, die Schaffung von Arbeitsplätzen und Einkommensmöglichkeiten sowie Investitionen in die lokale Infrastruktur. Es gibt Versionen auf Englisch und Französisch.

abstractIn diesem Beitrag wird ein Analyserahmen entworfen, um Konflikte um Land, die im Zusammenhang mit strukturellen Transformationsprozessen und Krisen stehen, der empirischen Untersuchung zugänglich zu machen. Basierend auf einem handlungsorientierten Konfliktbegriff und Bourdieus Feldbegriff wird das Konfliktfeld (field of conflict) als Analyserahmen vorgeschlagen. Ziel ist es, vereinfachende Ursache-Wirkungserklärungen, die Konflikte um Land als 'lokale' Reaktionen auf 'globale' Krisen fassen, zu überwinden. Das Konfliktfeld besteht aus vier relational aufeinander bezogenen Elementen: Strukturveränderungen; Akteure und ihren Positionen im Feld; der Rolle des Staates und den durch staatliches Handeln definierten Regeln, die das Konfliktfeld kennzeichnen und ihm seine je eigene Logik verleihen; Narrative, mittels derer Akteure Veränderungen Bedeutung zuweisen und dominante Bedeutungen herausfordern.

7. Mining conflicts in sub-Saharan Africa : actors and repertoires of contention
abstractIndustrial mining is currently one of the fastest growing sectors of the world economy, particularly in the Global South. The present mining boom is, however, accompanied by numerous conflicts: conflicts over labour relations, over territorial control and access to water and land resources, over the effects on local livelihoods, on gender relations and ecological systems, and over the distribution of profits and tax revenues. In this paper, a typology of mining conflicts is developed, starting with existing case studies of current conflicts over industrial mining in sub-Saharan Africa and building on my own research in Burkina Faso. In contrast to existing typologies, the one presented here is based not on the subjects of the conflicts but on actor constellations: conflicts between trade unions and mining companies; between civil society organisations on the one hand and the state and mining companies on the other; and between artisanal miners and mining companies. I argue that historically shaped socio-ecological and socio-economic conditions, namely the existing land usages, have a crucial effect on the actors and actor constellations in conflicts over mining, and that different actors have different means of engaging in conflict at their disposal, and thus rely on different repertoires of contention when engaging in collective conflicts.
