abstract

"All chapters present the most current research, theory and practice in the field of nonprofit leadership and management with focused attention on the unique challenges confronting all nonprofit leaders, especially accountability, and the increased pressure to demonstrate outcomes and results following one of the most difficult and challenging economic periods in the sector's history. Organized into five parts featuring original contributions by 28 of the sector's leading voices, Part One provides the context and institutional setting in which nonprofts operate. Part Two covers the structure of leadership and management in nonprofit organizations with an emphasis on the importance of board effectiveness and the correlation to organizational effectiveness. Part Three examines organizational operations and the management of relationships with internal and external stakeholders and constituents. Part Four provides the strategic dimensions of financial management and includes detailed approaches to achieving financial viability over the long term. Part Five focuses on the effective attraction, selection, retention and management of staff, including volunteers."--

6. Classification of program activities : how nonprofits create social value

abstract

This paper defines and describes a framework to classify program activities utilized by nonprofit organizations to achieve public benefit objectives. Drawing on theory and practice from strategy, nonprofit management, and program planning, the paper proposes five program activities differentiated by the value created. Several factors define and differentiate the approaches and serve as decision areas for nonprofit managers when developing program strategies. Classifying program activities facilitates further research as it provides a common language and framework to analyze strategic choices enacted in nonprofit organizations.

10. Nonprofit governance : innovative perspectives and approaches

abstract

The current fashion for rolling back the state has seen the nonprofit or third sector playing an increasing role in what were previously the heartlands of the public sphere. The growing significance of the sector and its increasing reliance on public funds mean it has also attracted increased scrutiny. From outside the sector concerns have been raised about the accountability and performance of nonprofit organizations. From within the sector there has been considerable debate about whether the increased reliance on government contracts is in danger of undermining the sector's independence

Sonam Wangchuk (born 1 September 1966) is an Indian engineer, innovator and education reformist. He is the founding-director of the Students' Educational and Cultural Movement of Ladakh (SECMOL), which was founded in 1988 by a group of students who had been in his own words, the 'victims' of an alien education system foisted on Ladakh. He is also known for designing the SECMOL campus that runs on solar energy and uses no fossil fuels for cooking, lighting or heating. Wangchuk was instrumental in the launch of Operation New Hope in 1994, a collaboration of government, village communities and the civil society to bring reforms in the government school system. He invented the Ice Stupa technique that creates artificial glaciers, used for storing winter water in form of conical shaped ice heap. (Source: DBPedia)
