Ab 1969 war er ordentlicher Professor an der Universität zu Köln. 1972 kehrte er als Lehrstuhlinhaber nach Erlangen zurück. Er befasste sich vor allem mit allgemeiner historischer Geographie, Länderkunde des islamischen Orients und geomorphologischen Prozessen.
