Göttingen, 1929 außerordentlicher Professor. 1935 wurde er schließlich zum ordentlichen Professor und Ordinarius für Völkerkunde berufen. 1941-1943 Rektor in Göttingen. 1946 entlassen, 1949/1950 erhielt er seinen Lehrstuhl für Völkerkunde in Göttingen zurück.
