Berlin zum apl. Professor für Geographie berufen, 1945-46 befand er sich in Kriegsgefangenschaft. Nach seiner Rückkehr arbeitete er 1946 einige Zeit mit A. Philippson in Bonn zusammen. 1947 wurde er als ao. Professor nach Bonn berufen und ging 1949 als o. Professor und Direktor des Geographischen Instituts an die Univ. Frankfurt (Dekan der Naturwiss. Fak. 1964/65; Emeritierung 1968). 1968/69 war er vertretungshalber erneut am Lehrstuhl für Geographie tätig. Er gründete die "International Commission on Karst Phenomena" der IGU. Nach 1945 trug er gemeinsam mit Troll und anderen zum Wiederaufbau der Deutschen Hochschulen bei. Begründete 1946 zusammen mit Troll die Zeitschrift "Erdkunde".
