Von 1921 bis 1927 war er in Riga Dozent der Philosophie und von 1928 bis 1939 ordentlicher Professor der Philosophie. Von 1940 bis 1941 lehrte er als Professor der Philosophie an der Universität Königsberg. 1941 wechselte Stavenhagen an die Reichsuniversität Posen.
