Juli 1975 Biblio: Nach zwei Berufsjahren als Lektor eines Kartenverlages und Dozent an der State Norman School, Salem, Massachusetts, promovierte er 1915 an der Universität Chicago. Sauer erhielt daraufhin eine Dozentur an der Universität Michigan, Ann Arbor. Dort wurde er 1922 zum Professor ernannt. 1923 wechselte er an die University of California, Berkeley. Sauer verfügte über gute Kenntnisse der deutschen Geographie. Seine Arbeiten wiesen Bezüge zu den Gedanken von Ratzel und insbesondere Herder auf. Sauer, der einen Teil seiner Kindheit auf einer methodistischen Schule in Calw, Baden-Württemberg, verbrachte, hatte enge Kontakte nach Deutschland. 1955 erhielt er die Ehrendoktorwürde der Universität Heidelberg, 1959 die Humboldt-Medaille der Gesellschaft für Erdkunde zu Berlin.
