Im Jahr 1954 wurde die Regional Science Association gegründet, deren erster Präsident und späterer Ehrenvorsitzender Isard war. 1956 verließ Isard das MIT und wechselte an die University of Pennsylvania (Professor für Ökonomie und Regionalwissenschaften). 1977 trat Isard vom Lehrstuhl für Regionalwissenschaft an der Penn State University zurück, um sich verstärkt der Friedenswissenschaft zu widmen, und wechselte 1979 an die Cornell University (Professor für Ökonomie und Regionalwissenschaften).
