4. Cash and the hidden economy : laboratory and artefactual field experimental evidence on fighting tax evasion in small business transactions
abstractIncreasing the tax compliance of self-employed business owners (particularly of tradespecific service providers) remains an ongoing challenge for tax authorities. From a compliance point of view, cash transactions are particularly problematic when services are paid for on the spot, as such exchanges are difficult to audit. As a novelty we present experimental evidence testing 11 different policy strategies in a setting that allows for cash transactions. Our sample includes both students and non-students active in service industries characterised by the opportunity to engage in cash transactions. While our results offer a positive outlook for the interventions reporting a significant effect, they particularly speak to the potential of moral suasion to increase compliance, as it may be implemented at relatively low cost. However, a carrot (offering support in tax declarations) as well as a stick (increasing the threat of audits) approach may be promising for increased compliance, especially where there is an evasion opportunity in cash-for-service payments between small businesses and individual customers who may share a common benefit from tax evasion. A stick approach is particularly efficient for those inclined to use cash transactions.

5. μ-σ games
abstractRisk aversion in game theory is usually modeled using expected utility, which was criticized early on, leading to an extensive literature on generalized expected utility. In this paper we are the first to apply μ-σ theory to the analysis of (static) games. μ-σ theory is widely accepted in the finance literature; using it allows us to study the effect on uncertainty endogenous to the game, i.e., mixed equilibria. In particular, we look at the case of linear μ-σ utility functions and determine the best response strategy. In the case of 2 × 2 and N × M games, we are able to characterize all mixed equilibria.

8. How Gender and Other Identity Factors Influence Attitudes Toward Will Making : Lessons from Australia
abstractThis essay aims to stimulate interest in further empirical study of attitudes toward will making by reporting the results of a 2022 survey conducted in Australia of the general population (n=1202) and legal professionals (n=112). We asked participants for their views about the ideal age at which to begin the will-making process and the relative contributions of the client and attorney to any resulting will. There was a discernible gender-based difference in views on both questions. Women preferred to initiate those conversations approximately six years earlier than men did and, especially at earlier life stages, preferred less professional input into the will-making process than men did. Income and education levels appear to have no impact on individuals’ responses to these questions. The sample population was sufficiently homogeneous that it is not possible to draw conclusions about how religious background or political views may impact preferences about when the first will-making conversation should occur or the desired relative contribution of the legal professional to the ultimate will
