4. 136-Years of Variations of Metals in Sediment from a Subtropical Reservoir in Southern Brazil : Implications for the Environmental Change

abstract

Two sediment cores from the Passauna reservoir in Curitiba, Brazil were examined in order to follow the accumulation of heavy metals, including lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd), chromium (Cr), copper (Cu), zinc (Zn) and nickel (Ni) and major elements aluminum (Al), iron (Fe), manganese (Mn), potassium (K) and barium (Ba), and association to pollution. Enrichment factor (EF) and geoaccumulation index (I geo ) were applied to identified accumulation of metals as well to the level of pollution. The decay of radionuclides, including 210 Pb and 137 Cs, were used to find the rate of sedimentation along the years. The results showed a spatial variation, with the highest concentration of metals found in the upstream part of the reservoir. The EF values of the following metals decreased: in core I, EF(Fe) > EF(Mn) > EF(Cd) > EF(Sb) > EF(Zn) > EF(Cu) > EF(Cr) > EF(Pb); and in core II, EF(Sb) > EF(Pb) > EF(Cd) > EF(Cr) > EF(Fe) > EF(V) > EF(Zn) > EF(Cu) > EF(Ni) > EF(Mn). We observed that during the period 1930-1970, anthropogenic activities controlled the impacts on reservoir and water quality. In addition, paleoredox and paleoproductivity showed periods with different rates of productivity as well as alternate periods of trophic level. We used the Mn/Fe, Cu/Ni and V(V+Ni) ratio

8. How Banks Price Loans for LBOs : An Empirical Analysis of Spread Determinants

abstract

This paper examines which factors determine the pricing of loans for LBOs, using a worldwide sample of 11,111 loans closed in the 2000-2016 period. Our findings are consistent with the hypothesis that loans for LBOs are priced differently by common factors than other syndicated loans. We show that loans extended to borrowers in market- versus bank-based financial systems are differently priced and that loan spreads are explained not only by contractual and macroeconomic factors, but also by proxies for bank syndicate structure, tranching, and acquired firms' characteristics. We find that loans extended to borrowers in market-based financial systems have higher spreads than those in bank-based financial systems, but this difference disappears when controlling for targeting firms' characteristics. Finally, a robust convex relationship between spread and maturity is found, suggesting higher market competition by banks and investors for standard, medium-term maturities

9. The Choice between Project Financing and Corporate Financing : Evidence from the Corporate Syndicated Loan Market

abstract

We examine the factors that influence public firms' choice between project financing and corporate financing. Using a sample of 15,191 syndicated deals closed between 2000 and 2016, we find that economies of scale, agency costs of debt, and information asymmetry arguments affect the choice of on- versus off-balance-sheet funding. However, our analysis does not provide evidence supporting project finance as a mechanism to reduce sponsors' cost of borrowing: project finance deals' weighted average spread is equal to or higher than that of comparable corporate financing deals and sponsors' creditworthiness does not deteriorate when compared to a sample of matched firms

10. Understanding the Initiators of Social Innovation in Rural Areas

abstract

As in the social innovation literature, the role of initiators / agentic engines is highlighted, the purpose of the paper is to deepen the understanding of initiators in the social innovation process and to further develop its evaluation. Accepting that the role of individuals is one of the most important aspects of the social innovation process, the main question posed in this study is how to develop the evaluation of this aspect further, and how to make it more objective. To get a deeper understanding of agentic engines, beyond literature review a group profile of selected social innovators is analyzed. The results are based on their Profile XT personal competence assessments (provided by Profiles International Hungary) as well as in-depth interviews with them. The research reveals four elements for rating initiators: having a vision (purpose driven), being interested in serving people (Relationship System Intelligence), being proactive (positive attitude) and having a diverse network (outsider and insider)
