3. Entrepreneurial investment evaluation decision-making : a focus on venture capitalists, business angels and early-stage entrepreneurs in South Africa

abstract

Business angels (BAs) and venture capitalists (VCs) are important sources of finance for entrepreneurs in emerging markets for raising start-up and growth capital. Recognising that entrepreneurial investment evaluation decision-making is a highly complex process, and that there are limited studies focused on evaluation criteria used by both BAs and VCs', this article undertakes an empirical investigation by identifying, classifying and statistically testing the rank importance of investment criteria in South Africa from an early-stage entrepreneurial perspective. Results indicate that the rank importance for the different investment criteria is relatively similar for VCs and BAs, and the only ranking difference observed was on the team preparedness and team attributes, relevant for early-stage entrepreneurs. An empirical study of this nature is important as unique insights emerge from testing multiple investment evaluation criteria used by VCs, BAs and early-stage entrepreneurs in an African emerging country context.

4. The Value of Fit Information in Online Retail : Evidence from a Randomized Field Experiment

abstract

With the growing relevance of online channels, retailers are exploring new ways in which they can overcome the impediments associated with selling products with non-digital attributes, such as apparel, without customers having physical access to products. Virtual fitting-room technologies can provide information about how a product fits a particular customer in a novel way and mitigate the stress that the existing information gap generates in the retailer’s supply chain. By implementing a series of randomized field experiments, we study the value of virtual fit information in online retail. Customers are randomly assigned to a treatment condition where virtual fit information is available or to a control condition where virtual fit information is not available. Our results show that offering virtual fit information increases conversion, basket sizes, average price of purchased products, and revisits to the site, while reducing fulfillment costs arising from returns and home try-on behavior, e.g., customers ordering multiple sizes of the same product. Furthermore, we find the effects are more intense for products that are more expensive and those with more sizes available. We discuss the consequences and implications for the online retailers' supply chains

9. Economic terms in the news during the Great Recession : a diachronic sentiment and collocational analysis

abstract

"This book explores the evolution of sentiment in economic terms in the press during financial crises applying a combination of sentiment analysis techniques and usage fluctuation analysis on a diachronic corpus derived from editorials in quality newspapers during the Great Recession. The book uncovers two key findings: first, certain economic terms become event words during times of crisis due to their increase use in the press and the general public, revealing rapid semantic changes in economic terms caused by major socio-economic events. Second, sentiment-laden collocations are found to be influenced by culture, highlighting language's adaptability to financial upheavals. This work proposes an innovative methodology that combines lexicon-based Sentiment Analysis, Corpus Linguistics, and qualitative Discourse Analysis to shed light on how language shapes economic discourse, making it a valuable resource for scholars exploring the relationship between language and historic events"--
