1. The economic impacts of the rural credit : an analysis of the Brazilian National Family Farming Strengthening Program by biome

abstract

This study aims to assess the economic impacts of the National Family Farming Strengthening Program (Pronaf) in the various Brazilian biomes. The impacts at the sectoral, regional, and macroeconomic levels, arising from increases in rural credit to farmers in Brazilian territory - family and non-family farmers separately considered -, are carried out using the Computable General Equilibrium model, TERM-Biomas, specially built for analysis of the rural sectors in the Brazilian biomes. The key conclusion is that all regions of the model win, in the most varied magnitudes. Regions with higher participation in family farming production earn more than others. Up to the year 2020, some regions - from the Caatinga biome - show comparative losses. This may be because traditionally family farming regions would have their demands for primary factors more drastically increased, investments and jobs migrate, for example, from those regions of Caatinga. When the results are analyzed in a wider time limit, however, the results suggest general gains. The more vulnerable and specialized in family farming sectors are the regions, the greater the gains.

3. The impacts of climate change on agricultural production, land use and economy of the Legal Amazon region between 2030 and 2049

abstract

Global warming and climate impact on agricultural output, land use and food production. This paper seeks to verify the economic impacts of climate change in the Legal Amazon region, especially on agricultural production, land use, GDP and job creation. We employ the Computable General Equilibrium (CGE) model, REGIA - Inter-regional General Equilibrium Model for the Brazilian Legal Amazon, to assess changes in agricultural production and land use in the region due to climate change scenarios proposed by the IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change). The results indicate a drop in economic indicators in the Legal Amazon leading to a loss in real GDP in the order of 1.18% in 2049 due to decrease in production and employment in the agricultural sector. Deforestation will increase due to the gradual replacement of pasture areas by crop fields. Such changes are not homogeneous in the space, affecting more the states of Mato Grosso, Tocantins and Pará, whose economy are dependent upon agriculture.

9. Decomposing Brazilian manufacturing industry dynamics in the mid-2000s : macroeconomic factors and their sectoral impacts

abstract

The manufacturing industry's loss in participation, phenomena called "deindustrialization", has been observed for the Brazilian economy for a while and seems to have intensified from mid-2000s. However, the literature has not developed a consistent or integrated analysis of this process. We have used a detailed simulation model to identify how macroeconomic factors (such as exchange rate, labor costs, and household consumption) have contributed to manufacturing dynamics. Our results indicate that the macroeconomic scenario explains a large portion of the manufacturing industry's participation loss. The rise in households consumption and investment, important factors in this period, were responsible for dampening of the pressures coming from the currency appreciation and the workforce costs, benefiting some industrial sectors, but not avoiding the manufacturings participation loss.
