1. Motivated political reasoning: the formation of belief-value constellations

abstract

We study the causal relationship between moral values ("ought" statements) and factual beliefs ("is" statements) and show that, contrary to predictions of orthodox Bayesian models, values exert an influence on beliefs. This effect is mediated by prior political leanings and, thus, contributes to increasing polarization in beliefs about facts. We study this process of motivated political reasoning in a preregistered online experiment with a nationally representative sample of 1,500 individuals in the US. Additionally, we show that subjects do not distort their beliefs in response to financial incentives to do so, suggesting that deep values exert a stronger motivational force.

4. Metropolregionen - Quellen und Mündungen von Wanderungsströmen

abstract

Für Metropolregionen kennzeichnend sind die internationale Verflechtung und die Einbindung in verschiedene Arten von Strömen. Ausmaß und Qualität der Migration als Abbild der Menschen- und Wissensströme, die in die Metropolregionen münden und aus ihnen "entspringen", sind mitentscheidend für ihre Leistungsfähigkeit und Entwicklung. Alle vier wesentlichen metropolitanen Funktionsbereiche, die Entscheidungs-, Innovations-, Gateway- und Symbolfunktion, werden durch Wanderungen vor allem von hoch Qualifi zierten gestärkt. Als wichtige "Pull-Faktoren" gelten harte Standortbedingungen, wie etwa das Vorhandensein von Arbeitsplätzen in den "creative industries", gleichermaßen aber auch weiche Faktoren: Weltoffenheit, kulturelle Ausstrahlung und Image spielen eine wichtige Rolle. Um Wanderungen als "Lebenselixier" für Metropolregionen wirksam werden zu lassen, sind veränderte Sichtweisen und gezielte Maßnahmen notwendig.
