2. The role of ERP in business model innovation : impetus or impediment
abstractPurpose This research explores the moderating role of Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) in (Business Model (BM) innovation by comparing two groups of Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs) that are still in the process of considering adoption of ERP or already have implemented ERP. In particular, the aim is to see whether ERP enables or hampers the relationship between BM experimentation, i.e. the process of BM innovation, and BM performance. An important mediator, with a focus on downstream value delivery and creation, is the novelty of the BM in question. Design/methodology/approach This research is based on a large quantitative study among Spanish firms that are engaged in BM innovation activities and in different phases of implementing ERP. A representative sample of 208 Spanish firms engaged in Business Model Innovation from different sectors was used to collect data, which was analysed using heterotrait-monotrait (HTMT) for scaling and Structural Equation Modelling (SEM) for model testing. Findings Quantitative findings show that there is a direct positive impact of BM experimentation on BM performance for firms that did not implement an ERP, while downstream novelty leads to improved value capture due to increased efficiency and the associated cost reduction. By contrast, firms with ERP show a better performance, depending on the degree of the downstream novelty of the BM. Originality/value There is no previous research exploring the moderating role of ERP in BM Innovation for SMEs. This is the first study to examine whether BM experimentation affects BM performance and value capturing, as mediated by BM novelty and moderated by implementation by ERP.

5. Evaluating SMEs readiness to transform to IoT-based business odels
abstractThe connection of devices, as enabled by the Internet of Things (IoT), has a significant impact on business activities, processes, and performance. IoT is, therefore, gaining attention from practitioners and academia. The deployment of technological innovations is inseparable from changes in business activities, and therefore also affects business models (BMs) of both large corporations as well as small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). Both face challenges on transformations to their business models due to the use of IoT solutions, although these changes might be different for both. Extant literature on IoT-based business models mainly focuses on transformations in large companies. Since SMEs play an important role in the market's value creation, it is particularly important to understand SMEs business model transformations, caused by IoT. Research on this topic is limited and faces many theoretical and methodological challenges. Therefore, this paper proposes a mixed method approach to study SMEs readiness to transform business models as a result of implementing IoT solutions. Based on a systematic literature review, and a pilot study (by using a case of one SME in Lithuania), we developed a mixed method research design in which input-output relation between case studies for theory formulation as well as theory testing are proposed.

8. The impact of digitalization on business models : how IT artefacts, social media, and big data force firms to innovate their business model
abstractDigital technology has forced entrepreneurs to reconsider their business models (BMs). Although research on entrepreneurial intention and business models is gaining attention, there is still a large knowledge gap on both fields. In this paper, we specifically address the impact of digitalization on business model innovation (BMI). Based on data collected from 338 European small- to medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) actively using IT artefacts, social media, or big data to innovate their business model, we study antecedents of BM experimentation and BM innovation practices, as well as overall business performance. We carried out four in-depth case studies of companies in which BM innovation is related to IT artefacts and more specifically to social media and big data. The findings from the quantitative study show that BMI is related to IT artefacts, social media, and big data. Use of IT artefacts, social media, and big data is mainly driven by strategic and innovation-related internal motives, although external technology turbulence plays a role too. BM innovation driven by IT artefacts, social media, and big data has an impact on performance. Although the case studies show that this is more evident for IT artefacts and big data than for social media.
